Jeremy Ewing - Director of Bands and Orchestras Email: jewing@jeffco.k12.co.us Phone 303-982-1974 Mr. Ewing is very excited to begin his duties as Director at Dakota Ridge High School. He is originally from Cincinnati, Ohio and is now beginning his 15th year of working with high school bands. His work began in Cincinnati in 1993 where he was the marching and concert percussion instructor for Colerain High School. In 2001, he received his Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Miami University. While pursuing his degree, he was the percussion section leader in their nationally recognized marching band and participated in numerous concert ensembles. After graduation, he moved to Cleveland and was selected as the head band director at the prestigious St. Ignatius High School. There he directed their Marching Band, Jazz Bands, and Concert Bands in addition to teaching several other academic courses. He remained at St. Ignatius High School for three years before returning to Miami University to pursue his Masters Degree in Music Education which he received in 2006. Mr. Ewing moved to Denver in 2006 where he served as a full time music substitute in both the Jefferson County and Cherry Creek school systems. Mr. Ewing has also served on the staff of the nationally acclaimed drum corps--The Cavaliers. He currently lives in Denver with his fiancee. |

Katrina Cavaliere - Director of Bands & Orchestra Email: kcavalie@jeffco.k12.co.us Phone 303-982-3918 Mrs. Cavaliere is in her third year of teaching instrumental music at Summit Ridge Middle School. She received her Bachelors of Arts in Music from the University of Northern Colorado and (thirteen years and two kids later) received her Bachelors in Music Education from Metro State College of Denver. Over the past 15 years, Mrs. Cavaliere has worked with drumlines/pits, was an assistant director for marching band, instructed percussion ensembles, and taught music at the preschool level. She has published two of her original percussion ensemble works. Mrs. Cavaliere lives in South Jeffco with her husband (also a band director in Jeffco) and her two children. |

| "Screamin' Eagles" Marching Band |
|
The Dakota Ridge High School Screamin’ Eagles Marching Band is the largest performing group in the instrumental music program. Participation in the marching band provides students with a unique opportunity to blend physical and mental discipline with the creativity and beauty of the performing arts. The goals of the marching band program are to: • Provide students with the best musical experience possible through positive show design, quality instruction, and frequent performance. • Perform music that is interesting as well as challenging to the performers. • Be competitive in the marching band competitions attended throughout the season. The Screamin’ Eagles Marching Band performs at home football games, pep rallies, competitions, and parades. The Marching Band season begins on July 16th with section practices and a week long Marching Band Camp from August 6th through August 11th. The season culminates with the Colorado Bandmasters State Marching Band regional, quarter-final, semi-final, and final state competitions in late October or early November. The Color Guard is an auxiliary group that performs as an integral part of the Screamin’ Eagles Marching Band in all the marching band appearances. Color guard members use dance, movement, flags, rifles, and other equipment to enhance the visual experience for the marching band audience. The String Orchestra ensemble is a fall semester ensemble composed of string players at all levels of ability. All students enrolled in this class will audition at the beginning of the year to determine chair placement within the ensemble. There are also two openings for pianists. The ensemble performs various styles of orchestral literature from the standard orchestra catalog, with theory being an integral part of the class. Participation in all concerts, performances, rehearsals, and competitions is required. String Orchestra students may also audition for the pit orchestra, which provides the music for the Dakota Ridge spring musical. The 8-1-5 Jazz Band is an advanced performing group specializing in jazz techniques and the performance of jazz, rock, and related musical literature. Placement is by audition only. Objectives for the ensemble are to expand improvisational skills and fundamental knowledge of jazz through performance of various styles and periods of music. Participation in all concerts, performances, rehearsals, and competitions is required. Symphonic Band is a spring semester ensemble composed of students who were enrolled in Marching Band in fall semester. Symphonic Band members may also audition for the Pit Orchestra to provide music for the spring musical. Repertoire is taken from the standard band literature with a focus on musical development. Participation in all concerts, performances, rehearsals, and competitions is required. Depending on enrollment, the Symphonic Band may be split (Cardinal Concert Band and Navy Symphonic Band). Students will audition for chair placement in November of the fall semester. The ensemble annually competes in the Columbine Band Festival and CHSAA Band Competitions. The Symphonic Band is one of the top-rated bands in Colorado and received superior ratings in all categories at the 2004 Columbine Band Competition--the only band in the competition to do so!!! Symphonic Orchestra is the spring semester ensemble for members of the String Orchestra. The string students are supplemented by wind and percussion students from the Symphonic Band to form this premier musical ensemble. The Dakota Ridge High School Spring Musical is noted for high quality, live music provided by the pit orchestra. Quite an accomplishment when many high schools rely on recorded music for their musicals. Students from a variety of instrumental music ensembles audition for a position in the pit orchestra. This opportunity requires intense rehearsal sessions over a period of approximately six weeks, culminating in matinee and evening performances of the musical in March. Winter Guard developed as a venue for color guard members to continue to learn and perform after the end of
marching band season. Competitions are held at the regional and national level, sponsored by the
Rocky Mountain Color Guard Association and Winter Guard International. WGI calls winter guard the "Sport of the Arts,"
combining pageantry and the performing arts to bring music to life through performance in a competitive arena. Winter Guard is a spring semester extracurricular activity. The Summit Ridge Symphonic Band is an advanced performing group and performs music that is at the upper middle school and high school level. The instrumention for this ensemble is much more complete than that of other Summit Ridge ensembles. Music theory, technique, and other exercises in musicality are an intergal part of this course. Placement is by chair auditions, and home practice is manditory each and everyday. (Minimum home practice expectation is 30 minutes each day.) Participation in all concert and community performances is manditory. The 2003-2004 Summit Ridge Symphonic Band was the proud winner of the 2004 Music in the Parks Top Middle School Symphonic Band and also won the Overall Band Sweepstakes Award. One of the main goals of the Summit Ridge Eighth Grade Orchestra is to prepare the 8th graders for high school. This group continues working on the same concepts they learned in 7th grade as well as learning more advanced musicianship skills. All Orchestra students at Summit Ridge participate in many performances throughout the year including school concerts, area music festivals, performances with the Dakota Ridge High School Orchestra, and finally a competition at the end of the school year. The Summit Ridge Seventh Grade Orchestra provides incoming students with an opportunity to begin refining their music skills including listening and tuning skills, technique, and expression and phrasing. They also begin building up some musical "chops". This class works out of a method book as well as playing age appropriate literature. The 2004-2005 was the inaugural year with the Seventh Grade Orchestra as a separate class from the Eighth Grade Orchestra. The smaller class size allows for more one-on-one attention and also allows the students to build confidence. In the third trimester, this class joins the Eighth Grade Orchestra. All Orchestra students at Summit Ridge participate in many performances throughout the year including school concerts, area music festivals, performances with the Dakota Ridge High School Orchestra, and finally a competition at the end of the school year. The Dakota Ridge Instrumental Music Boosters (DRIMB) was formed to: • Support instrumental music activities in the Dakota Ridge High School articulation area • Recognize student achievements • Promote pride within the school and community environment • Encourage involvement of staff, faculty, parents, and the community • Raise funds to support instrumental music activities Most of the parents involved with DRIMB have discovered what a wonderful opportunity it is to support their student’s experience in instrumental music through their volunteer efforts. The instrumental music program depends on volunteers to help with competitions, transportation, equipment purchase and repair, uniform distribution, and fund-raising, among other tasks. Volunteer efforts, whether on a limited or more extensive basis, are greatly needed and much appreciated. There are no fees or dues associated with membership in the Dakota Ridge Instrumental Music Boosters. Anyone with a student in the instrumental music program (high school, middle school, or elementary) is automatically a member!
